Bringing a Traditional Home to Life

This project was all about blending traditional bones with fresh style. The homeowners wanted their main living spaces to feel welcoming, cozy, and layered, without losing the timeless feel of their home. With kids, dogs and a love for antique finds, they needed beautiful, functional spaces that reflected their personality.

First we focused on the entry, hallway, formal sitting room, and dining room. Tying them together with moody blues, textured accents, custom upholstery, and fun styling.

Let’s start with a look at where we began…

ENTRY & HALLWAY: Texture, Tone & a Pop of Pattern

The home’s entry already featured gorgeous hardwood floors and a grand staircase, but it lacked warmth and definition. We started by anchoring the space with a custom rug from English Village Lane (Sleeping Porch, from their Modern Oushak collection). The soft mix of blues, creams, and greens set the tone for everything to come.

To make the curved nook under the stairs feel intentional, we added a pair of antique French chairs reupholstered in a bold teal stripe, hung artwork above, and installed a two-arm sconce that we completed with custom shades we made for the space.

On the opposite wall, we brought in a textured blue grasscloth console and placed it beneath artwork the clients already owned. We styled the console with buffet lamps, candlesticks, and a mix of collected accessories to create a warm, layered space.

In the hallway beyond, we brought in one of our favorite elements of the whole project: the arts and crafts Tracery Blooms wallpaper by Kravet. With its deep green floral pattern, it added a punch of personality to an otherwise pass-through space. We grounded it with a coordinating Annie Selke runner in deep blues.

FORMAL SITTING ROOM: Moody, Soft & Collected

This space already had bold wall color, Unpredictable Hue by Behr, but with white trim and chair rail, it felt visually choppy. We recommended going tone-on-tone by painting all the trim in the same deep shade, and it completely changed the mood of the room.

We kept the cream sofa and added gold side tables with classic lamps for balance. The client’s antique chairs were reupholstered and paired with fun custom pillows, made just for the space.

We layered in a navy striped rug from Hook & Loom and reupholstered a square ottoman in deep navy mohair velvet, that had a fun geometric print for a subtle pop. The windows got an upgrade with custom curtains in a white-and-blue block print, pinch-pleated and hung on gold hardware.

This room now feels cozy, conversational, and just a little dramatic. Perfect for grown up drinks and relaxing.

DINING ROOM: A Fresh Spin on Classic Dining

The dining room had a classic feel to begin with, dark wood furniture, neutral wallpaper, and traditional moulding but it felt a bit flat and too beige overall. We wanted to keep the formality but add color and life.

The first big change was replacing the dated chandelier with the Jacqueline Chandelier from Visual Comfort - a total game changer!

We added a soft Ballard rug in blue and cream, framed and stacked some of the client’s personal artwork, and reupholstered the dining chairs to tie in with the room’s fresh palette. The seats got a fresh perennials performance fabric that will hold up to wear and tear, but is oh so pretty.

One of our favorite pieces is a vintage bamboo server we found locally at For the Love of Bamboo, which we had lacquered in a deep navy for a bold contrast. The windows were softened with custom faux roman shades in a white-and-blue Lee Jofa floral, finished with a crisp blue tape detail.

Bringing It All Together

What started as a series of disconnected rooms is now a home that flows effortlessly. Deep blues, warm textures, meaningful pieces, and thoughtful layers made all the difference and best of all, every space now feels like them.

Stay tuned for Part 2 - we’ll be sharing the living room next, featuring a fully custom built-in design and 3D plans that helped bring the vision to life.
